                                          Sems Pa:
The Art of Motivation and Teaching

In the tantric phrase, sems pa, sems has been translated as motivation, or in sems las byung ba as conditioned mind.  This is the mind set required for the learning and execution of Thangka painting and wood carving, profound knowledge to be transmitted directly from teacher to student.  Our Tibetan teachers are aware of their dual role of equipping their students with skills which will allow them to make a living and passing on the sacred values of their society.

Our goal is to help sustain the vitality of the great artistic traditions of Tibetan art and craft at a time when they are threatened by rapid changes in society.  To give young Tibetans the opportunity to acquire the ancient craft traditions of their own culture in order to make a living for themselves and their families.  This was the expressed wish of almost everyone of the students of Jamyangling Castle Academy that we interviewed and asked to comment on their hopes for the future.
