Rumi, 1207-1273 Macedonia exists. It is important to assert this, but though Macedonia exists, many people in Macedonia are deeply troubled by conflicting views of how to define Macedonia, both as a National and Cultural identity. To make sure that these conflicts can be kept from destroying the country, the government of Macedonia has asked UN peace-keepers to remain in the country for the time being.
In October of this year I visited two schools: The Macedonian Orthodox Christian School and the Islamic School. The students of the Orthodox Christian School worshiped in a beautifully decorated basilica. The Muslim children worshipped in a large room in their school, because the mosque was used by the adults of the Albanian village. After having prayed to God in their own way, both groups responded enthusiastically to my request to express their views on the terrorist assault on New York and on the fighting in Macedonia itself. Both groups were united in one thought: that terrorism was a horrific event in our time and that war was evil. Love and peace were the words they used most often in talking to me.
